Hollywood refuses cigarettes

September 27, 2011

Number of smoking scenes in movies has reduced by 72 % from 2005 to 2010. If in the most top-grossing films of 2005 there were 1093 episodes with smoking, in the previous year (2010) their number has reduced to 595.

According to National Journal information of this fact is in question of American Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2010 75 of 137 top-grossing films haven't showed smoking scenes. While in 2005 such films were one third - 49 from 147.

In order to stimulate film studios refuse smoking scenes, authorities of majority American states offer them money compensations or tax exemptions. Total amount of these investments makes approximately 1 billion USD annually.

Since 2007 Motion Picture Association of America considers that smoking influences movie rating. In such a way, for example, "Avatar" of James Cameron got rating PG-13 (children less than 13 years are allowed to watch this movie only with parents) with a note: "smoke is present". But animation film "Rango" about funny chameleon that decides to become sheriff in a town on Wild West was labeled to PG category (children are recommended to watch film with parents) for "earthy humor, language, actions and smoking".
