| USA tobacco Companies are against measures of tobacco smoking controlAugust 22, 2011 Five US tobacco Companies have filed suit against Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with regard to new law that obliges manufacturers to place on cigarette packs graphic warnings about smoking harm. According to RJ Reynolds Tobacco, Lorillard Tobacco, Commonwealth Brands, Liggett Group and Santa Fe Natural Tobacco opinion new requirement infringes constitutional right to liberty of speech as it obliges Companies to promulgate governmental appeal about smoking harm. FDA hasn't made any comment on the suit yet. New illustrated warning about smoking harm should be placed on the half of front and back side of cigarette pack from September 2012. Existing warnings "Smoking can kill you" and "Cigarettes cause cancer" will be supplemented with illustrations on one of which man that has passed through tracheotomy, breathes out cigarettes smoke from the hole in the breast, on another - woman surrounded with smoke clouds, hugs a child. Besides, warning of smoking harm should take 20 % of the space on cigarettes advertisement, Britain TV channel BBC informs. In tobacco Companies don't hide that with the help of the suit they want to delay introduction of the new law. At that time In 40 pages suit is said that government illegally obliges Companies with the help of warning "frighten" consumers. "Government can claim to place warning on the product that directly says about harm. However, government cannot claim cigarette pack to become advertising panel of it's campaign for smoking control", - is said in common press-release. |
