Tobacco for cigars. Part 2

August 9, 2010

So, the plant has grown and it is time for cropping. It is a very uneasy thing, as almost each leaf on the bush has its own destination. The upper leafs of the bush are called corona and semi corona. These leafs differ with special aroma are usually used as a filler, though semi corona is often used for covering leaf. Leafs in the middle part, while going down, are divided into centro gordo (central thick), centro fino (central thin) and centro ligero (central bright). All these leafs perfectly fit for covering leaf. Leafs, that are located at the bottom part of the bush are called uno y medio (one and half) and libra de pie (at base). On the average on each tobacco bush should be 16-17 leafs that are picked by hands, and each leaf is separated of the bush just with one move of the hand. Cropping itself consists of sex steps, interval among which consists of approximately one week and it begins of the leafs that are located at the bottom part of the bush.

During harvesting pickers have to sort leafs at place. Those that will be used for covering leaf are bind in bunches per five pieces that are called manojo, or "hand" and are directed to drying in special shed (for other leafs this quantity sometimes reaches 100). In order to guarantee even heating of the shed premises, it is located in direction from East to the West but to control temperature inside the shed are used doors in its flat ends that by turns are opened and closed. Depending on the weather, drying process continues from 45 to 60 days.

It is important to underline that both during harvest and during drying constant control of leafs' quality takes place. Leafs, that in the future should become covering are sorted into ligero (bright), seco (dry), viso (glossy), amarillo (yellow), medio tiempo (halfs) and quebrado (broken). Leafs intended for filling and for binding leaf are sorted into volado, seco, ligero and medio tempo. Ligero leafs are leafs from the top of the bush, for them a very strong aroma is typical and high content of nicotine. Seco leafs are taken from the middle of the bush; they have lower content of nicotine. Volado leafs are located in the bottom part of the bush; they are added in the mix in order to improve burning conditions. Of course, during sorting is considered the size of the leafs and their condition, and not healthy or broken leafs are used for cigars of machine rolling or go for manufacturing cigarettes. In any case leafs collected from one bush provide opportunity to roll not more than 32 cigars...
