In New York was prohibited sale of cigarettes to people under age 21
June 30, 2014
On May 18th, 2014 in New York came into force local law that prohibits sale of cigarettes to persons younger than 21 years old. Respective document was signed six months ago by previous mayor Michael Bloomberg.
In tobacco stands on May 18th appeared warning tables telling that cigarettes, tobacco products and even electronic cigarettes "are not sold to people under age 21". This measure was already named unprecedented for huge American megalopolis which has "draconian tobacco legislation".
Here is prohibited smoking in bars and restaurants, parks, squares and even on city beaches. Similar ban is in force from April 29 concerning electronic cigarettes. In some residential buildings smoking is also prohibited.
Tobacco taxes in New York are also the highest in USA: the budget gets 5.85 USD for every pack what increases price on cigarette pack up to 12 USD. In New York is prohibited to sell cigarettes for less than 10.5 USD for a pack.
For the last ten years in New York share of smokers among adult population has reduced from 21.5 % in 2002 to 14.8 % in 2011. But as to the youth this figure remained the same from 2007 on level of 8.8 % of smokers. Authorities hope that increase of the age for buying cigarettes and tobacco eventually will reduce number of smokers by 55% in category of 18-20 years old. As AFP marks, "New York wants to give example and convince other USA cities to do the same".
